Persistent Blood-borne Infections and Complex Disease Expression

چکیده
It is important for the clinician to remember that vector-transmitted bacteria and protozoa have a very long evolutionary history, which spans millions of years. Many vector-borne organisms, such as Anaplasma, Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, Leishmania and Rickettsia species have an intracellular and intravascular life style, which for certain organisms are obligate in nature. Obviously, this means that the organism must reside within the cell of an arthropod, such as a louse, flea or tick, or within the cell of a mammalian host. As an example, Rickettsia has lost several critically important genes that are required for extracellular survival. In the absence of these genes, Rickettsia species have developed mechanisms that allow intracellular survival by manipulating selected biochemical pathways within the mammalian cell. For the clinician, it is critical to recognize evolutionary adaptation has facilitated complex interactions between arthropod vectors, bacteria and protozoa and mammalian reservoir hosts.

Introduction: Camping and hiking are popular worldwide recreational activities. All age groups, elderly or young, immunocompetent or immunosupressive people may engage in these activities. During these activities, individuals may get injured or be exposed to pathogens. There is also a strong possibility of experiencing mosquito, lice, or tick bites, bee stings, or being bitten ...
متن کاملAntiviral therapy: a perspective
This paper discusses extracorporeal removal of viral particles and their antigens from the blood as an auxiliary therapy. This hypothesis has not been reported before. In some chronic blood-borne viral infections, the virus remains systemic and persistent for extended periods of time, with adverse effects that weaken the immune system. Blood titers of virus and its toxins are proportional to th...

Introduction: Despite considerable efforts to control AIDS pandemic, it is still one of the significant infectious concerns worldwide. The advance in medical research has led to the development of highly active antiretroviral therapy with a considerable effect to suppress the disease. However, an effective vaccine capable of eradication the HIV pandemic is not available yet. Failure to develop ...

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II deficiency is a primary immunodeficiency disease characterized by abnormality of MHC class II molecules surface expression on peripheral blood lymphocytes and monocytes. Clinical manifestations include extreme susceptibility to viral, bacterial, and fungal infections but the immunodeficiency is not as severe as SCID (severe combined immunodeficien...
